Rarely seen up close,
these windows decorate the semi circular dome high above the Casavant
organ pipes. They are illuminated from behind with tungsten lights,
and are not exposed to the outdoor elements. Because of their
placement, they are also rather difficult to photograph in detail.
On March 19th 2003, I
got an escorted tour behind the
scenes and captured the close-ups now featured
below.
West Windows (1909) - The Law and The Prophets
There are five pairs of windows located above the organ pipes on the
west side of the church, describing the ten Commandments. From left to
right they portray the following:
(1) Habakkuk with a scroll as the symbol of wisdom and a Biblical book
(2) Hosea with a scroll
(3) Elisha the disciple of Elijah in Israel
(4) Isaiah
(5) Moses with two stones and horns (see Exodus 3:18)
(6) Elijah and a raven (see 1 Kings 17)
NOTE: The centre window features Moses and Elijah, both of whom
appeared with Christ at the transfiguration (Matthew 17). Note also
Moses is pointing to the 8th commandment;
"Thou shalt not steal."
