“Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.”
– Deuteronomy 6:5-9 (The Message)
Family Ministries is all about helping kids grow in their love of Jesus Christ and helping their families be a BIG part of that.
The Director of Family Ministries (DFM) works together with the Children’s Ministries Coordinator to oversee Knox’s Family Ministries (Families, Children, Camp, Youth) as well as other special events like the yearly Children’s Christmas Service, Easter services participation, and Knoxapalooza (our end of school year party) and other fun events. Get to know more about us by checking out our pastoral staff page.
Knox believes in the impact of families on children’s lives. This means healthy marriages make for healthier parenting that in turn make for healthier children. Of course there are always exceptions but for the most part, as the saying goes, “the apple does not fall far from the tree”. Our goal is for kids to grow in their love of Jesus Christ and for families to be a BIG part of that and kids’ authentic deepening relationship with Jesus Christ happens when parents are also experiencing an authentic deepening relationship with Jesus Christ, in the safety of a healthy grace-filled home.
Fellowship with other Families
Knox can be a busy place, and our lives are busy, so when do we as families get to know one another and to be those other adults our kids can look up to? Yes, our individual homes are important as safe-havens, but as the old African proverb reminds us, “it takes a village to raise a child”.
Please consider intentionally getting together with other families outside of church to share a meal, and to share snatches of conversation while we take care of our kids.
There are also Family Ministry Roundtables where you can meet others and be heard in our quest to make Family Ministries a loving, welcoming, and supportive ministry.
We also believe in serving together as families so keep an eye out on the Events page to see when these opportunities arise.
Each year we offer a cycle of either Alpha’s The Parenting Children’s Course or The Parenting Teenagers’ Course or a one off parenting seminar.
Our Library also offers books on parenting and we also have some other resources by way of newsletters and other websites to check out by request.
Each year we endeavour to have a course or seminar to highlight what we need to keep our marriages fresh, vibrant, and healthy.
Stay tuned to our church’s Events page here to know when these are coming up.
At Knox we believe each child is special, important, and valuable. We strive to have fun and vibrant programs that instill in kids the fundamental truths of Christianity and where they get to know Jesus up close and personal. We also believe that loving kids and families is the most important part of our ministry. Each Sunday, parents are encouraged to keep their children with them in the Sunday service until the Children’s Moment to model worship. After the Children’s Moment, the kids are dismissed to their programs.
At this time, there is Children’s Ministries Programming at the 11AM service only, but there are materials and trays on-hand for kids at the 5PM service.
Nursery (0 - 24 months)
Come join us in our bright, fun Nursery where babies will be well loved and cared for. Feel free to bring snacks and meals if your baby needs to eat during the service as we have highchairs you can use. We also have a sleepy-time room for babies who need naps or for nursing mothers who need a quiet spot.
The Nursery is located on the main floor just down the hall from the front office.
Babies can be dropped off before or during the 11AM Sunday service, starting from 10:45 am.
Tiny Tots (2 - 4 years old)
Toddlers can join in the playing, snacking, colouring and Bible lesson fun in our Tiny Tots class. The toddlers have a wonderful program each week, followed by snacks and activities.
The Tiny Tots class is located on the second floor on the south side of the main church building.
Toddlers can be dropped off before the 11AM Sunday service, starting from 10:45 am.
252s (SK - Grade 5)
252s are for the ‘big kids’ who are ready to delve deeper into God’s Word, and have fun discovering who God is together. The first part of the class all the kids hear an interactive Bible story together then break off into smaller groups based on their grade (SK to grade 2, and grades 3-5) to talk about how to apply the story, and do fun crafts and activities.
After being dismissed from the service (approximately at 11:20am) after the Children’s Moment they are led to the 2nd floor of the main church building and into the Goforth Hall for the rest of the program.
Kids stay in the main 11am Sunday service for worship and are dismissed to the rest of their program after the Children’s Moment.
Awana Friday Nights
Awana Go to Friday Nights! Starting on Friday October 14, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, for 8 consecutive Fridays, Knox and Toronto Alliance Church are the 1st of 3 Sessions of Awana. Awana is a program where fun and the Bible are interwoven wonderfully, and the age divisions are Sparks (grades 1 and 2) and T&T (grades 3-6). The cost of one session is $50, and each subsequent session is $35. Our cap is 22 participants based on a 1:2 leader to participant ratio and we will have a wait list if needed. We are currently at capacity for our first 8-week session but please do check back in when we re-open to take more registrations for the second and third sessions. If you would like to be involved in leadership please speak to Alvin (firstname.lastname@example.org) or to Spencer (email@example.com).
Knox Camps is all about making an impact in kids’ lives. We have had a vibrant, quality Christian camp running for the past 40 years and this ministry has been a great opportunity for kids to develop deep friendships, and to learn about our great God in fun and interactive ways. Send a kid to camp and have God change them for a lifetime!
If you would like to know how to send a child to camp, or would like more information, or if you would like to help get a kid to camp please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (416) 921-8993, ext. 250. Check out the Knox Camps page here: knoxcamps.ca
Knox Youth has programs for both Junior High (a.k.a. The JAM, grades 7-8) and High School (a.k.a. The Young & Free, grades 9-12). You can learn more about what Knox Youth is up to on our FaceBook page here.
The JAM (Grades 6 - 8)
The JAM meets on the 4th Friday of the month from 6:30-8:30PM to have fun together and to have a safe space for visiting friends. We also discover Scriptural truths together and build community by having a Bible study on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month during service. The Jr. High students will be called to the front and dismissed at the same time as the children for the Children’s Moment but they do not need to sit on the carpet and will not be addressed during the Children’s Moment…for fear that we destroy them via embarrassment!
We meet in the 3rd Floor Lounge (the room on the 3rd floor landing on the south side of the Goforth Hall) after being dismissed from the 11AM service.
The Young & Free (Grades 9 - 12)
On Fridays The Young & Free get together to get to know one another better through fun games, different events, and most significantly we study important and interesting topics from a biblical perspective.
On Sundays The Young & Free are encouraged to sit in service with BIG church as worship is for all of us and we all need to learn to be a worshipping family. The Young & Free are also encouraged to serve by getting involved in Children’s Ministry, or the other myriad ways of serving on a Sunday.
On Fridays we meet in our Youth Room in the basement of the south building (aka, The Fellowship Centre) and this room is located across from the bowling alley. BUT for Fridays please be sure to check the FaceBook page to make sure we are in the building or we may be out on a service trip or weekend camp.
Fridays, *NEW TIME* 8:30-10:30pm, except for certain long weekends and school breaks (Christmas Break, March Break, Easter, Summer Break).
On Wednesdays during the school year the gym at Knox is open from 3:30-5:30PM for a time of pick-up basketball for students in high school.
Our focus is on building relationships and exploring who Jesus is in a welcoming and safe environment. To that end, after the drop-in ends at 5:30PM, we will be hanging out with a smaller group to hang out and share life together.
